Family, friends and fellow police officers surrounded police Officer Craig Tudor in his wheelchair as he was honored by officials Wednesday night at Hazelwood City Hall.

“It’s overwhelming, the support we’ve had,” Tudor said after the ceremony, with his wife, Christine, by his side. “It’s been great. I’m at a loss for words.”

Tudor was given the city’s Purple Heart award to laud him for his service. He has been paralyzed from the chest down since an on-duty car crash last summer.

He was responding to a call on Aug. 25 when his patrol car collided with a car that made a left turn in front of him on Dunn Road near Interstate 270.

Tudor’s car went off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned. He was airlifted from the scene.

Michael Flamion and Craig Tudor have been on similar, yet separate, journeys to recovery from spinal cord injuries at Craig Hospital in Colorado.
He underwent several surgeries and spent about three months in rehabilitation at a hospital in Colorado.

The other driver was later ticketed.

Tudor had received a number of accolades since joining the department in 2005, Police Chief Gregg Hall said. But as courageous as he was day to day on the force, he has shown even more bravery during his long, difficult recovery, Hall said.

“He’s displayed courage without reproach,” Hall said. “He’s more than earned this Purple Heart award.”
