Westerly ,RI :One person killed fiery three-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 Monday night, August 31st 2015
One person was killed in a fiery three-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 just south of the Westley area rest stop Monday night.
No information was available Tuesday morning on the identity of the driver killed, only that he or she was driving a Hyundai. The model and year were undetermined because the vehicle was badly damaged and burned.
The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed in the No. 1 lane when it approached a Freightliner big rig and began to enter the No. 2 lane to pass it on the right, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Eric Parsons. Traffic was slowing because of construction work ahead.
As the Hyundai was passing, it veered left and its left side clipped the right rear of the big rig, Parsons said. The Hyundai continued back into the No. 1 lane, probably spinning, Parsons said.
A third vehicle, a 2010 Hyundai tractor-trailer, was merging from the No. 3 lane into the No. 2 lane and was hit by the first driver. The first driver's car became wedged beneath the Hyundai's trailer and caught fire.
The car and the trailer became fully engulfed in fire. The Hyundai car driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Parsons said.
The Freightliner driver, 30-year-old Alexis Jameson of Orlando, Fla., and the Hyundai big rig driver, 29-year-old Tyle Armstead of Philadelphia, were not injured, Parsons said. None of the drivers had passengers.
It was unknown Tuesday morning whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash, Parsons said.
According to tweets from Caltrans District 10, the No. 1 lane opened about 9:30 p.m. but all lanes and the rest area didn't open to traffic until about 6 a.m.
