Five children were injured on West Wilbeth Road after a woman refused to stop for officers and wrecked the car last Tuesday night.

Around 11:30 p.m, officer attempted to stop the driver, 33-year-old Lashawnna Taylor of Akron, on Copley Road when she took off with the children and another woman in the the SUV.

Police turned off their lights and sirens and did not chase the vehicle because they realized children were inside the vehicle.

Taylor continued to drive fast, running red lights as the officers followed from a distance without using lights or sirens

An unmarked Akron police car was able to find the SUV in the Kenmore area and followed it for a short time until a marked police car attempted a second traffic stop.

When officers attempted the second stop, Taylor took off again on West Wilbeth Road.

Again, officers tell NewsChannel5 they turned off their lights and tried to follow the SUV as it sped away.

The SUV crashed into a snow pile and flipped over at 26th Street SW and West Wilbeth Road.

A 2-year-old child in a car seat was thrown from the SUV and hit the side of a building.

The child in the car seat, four other children, ranging in age from 2 to 11 years old, Taylor and the other woman were all taken to Akron area hospitals.

The 2-year-old child thrown from the SUV suffered a broken leg, according to police. The other passengers in the car did not suffer serious injuries.

None of the children or adults were wearing seat belts, police reported.
