Logansport, IN : Drivers in critical condition after crash in Cass County on Tuesday afternoon, June 14, 2016
Two Logansport men were in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after their pickup trucks collided that morning, ejecting one and entrapping the other.
First responders were dispatched to the crash on Logansport Road east of 48th Street in Cass County at about 7:30 a.m. June 14.
Blake Callaway, 24, Logansport, was heading east in a silver Chevrolet Silverado on Logansport Road before colliding with a westbound gray Ford Ranger driven by Jesse Leazenby, 32, Logansport, according to a press release from the Cass County Sheriff's Department.
Callaway was found in the middle of the road, according to the press release.
Cass County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Shannon reported at the scene Tuesday morning that Callaway appeared to have been ejected from the Silverado as the truck went over a guardrail on the south side of the road before landing on its tires.
The press release states Callaway was transported to Community Howard Regional Hospital in Kokomo before being airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Leazenby had to be extricated from the Ranger before being transported to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, according to the press release.
The release states both drivers were in critical condition.
Rachel Storey, Logansport, was on her way to work in Peru when she came upon the rainy aftermath of the crash.
As a dental assistant, she's required to take part in training for certain medical emergencies and figured she might be able to apply that knowledge at the scene.
"I didn't think about it," Storey said. "I just got out of the car... I've never been in a situation like that. There wasn't a second thought, I got out of my car and figured there's got to be something I can do."
Storey said she went to the first vehicle she saw, where she found the entrapped Leazenby, whom she described as suffering from shock. She urged him to remain still until first responders arrived when he asked her to help him out of the vehicle, she continued.
Storey said she stayed with Leazenby and held his hand until he was extricated.
"I tried to get his mind off of the accident," she said, adding she asked Leazenby about himself and listened to him talk about his family.
Callaway's Silverado landed in Patty Shackelford's front yard. She said she heard the crash during the rainy morning, but thought it was thunder. When her dog continued to bark, she went outside to find the damaged Silverado.
Shackelford said it wasn't the first time a crash occurred on Logansport Road's curve near her property.
"It's a very dangerous road," she said.
An earlier report indicated the Ranger went left of center, but Cass County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jill Rife said Tuesday afternoon the crash remained under investigation.
Blood draws were taken from both drivers to test for blood alcohol content because of the seriousness of the crash, according to the press release.
Cass County Fire District, Indiana State Police, Logansport Fire Department, Logansport Police Department, New Waverly Fire Department and Prompt Ambulance Service responded.
