Clearwater, FL : Deadly pedestrian crash in Clearwater early Wednesday morning on June 4, 2014
A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday morning in Clearwater while crossing Gulf to Bay Boulevard. It is the second deadly crash in the last two weeks in which a pedestrian was killed on the busy road.
Investigators say Lionel L. Cauley, 36, of Clearwater, was trying to cross from the south to north side of the road when he was hit by a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Jose Cruz Hernandez, 52, of Clearwater.
No charges are expected to be filed as the pedestrian darted into the lanes of traffic for unknown reasons, according to Clearwater Police.
This was the second deadly crash involving a pedestrian in the last two weeks. On the morning of May 20, school crossing guard Doug Carey, age 70, was hit and killed by a car that ran a red light at the intersection of Gulf to Bay Boulevard and Belcher Road. Carey was standing on a sidewalk when the car sped through the red light, hit another car, then spun out of control and hit Carey, who was a retired Clearwater Police officer.
Police say the car's driver, Julius Johnson, age 28, ran away from the scene of the crash, leaving his two injured young daughters behind. He was caught and arrested.
