Motorcycle crash kills Madison Heights man

A Madison Heights man died late Sunday after the motorcycle he was riding crashed on Chicago Road in Warren.Ronald Louis Walters, 74, was westbound on 13 Mile at approximately 10:30 p.m. and lost control where the road becomes Chicago Road, police said.Detective Lt. Heidi Metz said Walters crossed the eastbound lanes and struck the curb along the south side of Chicago Road.“It sounds like, according to witnesses, that he may have been trying to get onto Old 13 Mile,” Metz said.Walters, who rode alone on the Harley-Davidson and was wearing a helmet, was transported to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where doctors pronounced him dead.Blood samples from Walters will be sent to the Michigan State Police crime lab to determine whether drugs or alcohol factored in the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said.The crash was the third in Warren since May in which a motorcyclist was killed.On July 17, Timothy Lynch died of injuries he suffered when the driver of a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee crossed the center line of Van Dyke near Old 13 Mile and collided with the northbound motorcycle driven by Lynch. Lynch, 57, a retired U.S. Army colonel from Washington Township, was then run over by a northbound vehicle, police said. The driver of the Jeep, Shawn Michael Fontyn, 27, is charged with driving while license suspended causing death, and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
