T3 INDIAN PURCHASE TOWNSHIP, ME : Millinocket couple died in car crash on the Golden Road early Saturday morning, November 12, 2016

An early morning car crash killed a Millinocket couple early Saturday morning on the Golden Road. Authorities believe speed and alcohol both contributed to the crash, a Maine State Police trooper said early Saturday evening.

Killed were Kevin Baker, 44, and 50-year-old Julie Colombo, Trooper Andrew Peirson said. The two were traveling west on the Golden Road at about 12:30 a.m. when the 1995 GMC Sierra pickup they were riding in crashed. The vehicle left the roadway on the lefthand side and went down a steep embankment and ejected both along the way, Peirson said.

Neither Baker nor Colombo was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred, Peirson said. He said that it appears that Baker was driving but said that the crash remains under investigation.

Peirson said that the crash was reported by a passer-by.

The Golden Road is privately owned and mostly unpaved, and extends from Millinocket west more than a 100 miles to the Quebec border. Peirson said the road was not paved in the area where the crash happened.
