Town of Sharon, WI : Three children injured in suspected OWI crash on Highway 67 at County Road K in the town of Sharon on Sunday, Aug 23, 2015
Three children ranging in age from 11-15 were seriously injured Sunday in a crash involving a suspected drunken driver, according to a release from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called at 8:51 p.m. to Highway 67 at County Road K in the town of Sharon on a report of a two-vehicle crash. Deputies said they found two vehicles off the road in the northeast corner of the intersection, one of them on its roof.
Investigators said a vehicle driven by Amaryllis Arellano, 24, of West Chicago, Illinois, was traveling east on Highway 67 when it was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Rafael Eleazar Cogsanon-Balam, 31, of Capron, Illinois. Deputies said Cogsanon-Balam was traveling on County Road K and failed to stop at the stop sign at Highway 67.
The injured children were among six occupants of Arellano’s vehicle. The children were taken to nearby trauma centers with numerous fractures.
Cogsanon-Balam was arrested on suspicion of three counts of causing great bodily harm by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. Deputies said more charges are possible.
The village of Sharon and village of Walworth police departments as well as fire and rescue services from Sharon, Walworth, Harvard, Darien, Medix and Mercy MD1 assisted at the scene.
