Birmingham, AL : 36-year-old man killed in southwest Birmingham head-on collision Monday on July 7, 2014

A 36-year-old man was killed early today after a head-on collision in southwest Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Joseph Elijah Bell, 36. The crash happened at just before 5:30 a.m. near 40th Street and Gray Avenue.

Authorities said they believe Bell was on his way to work when he was killed. He was driving a 2007 Buick Lucerne that collided with a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck that apparently lost control and veered into Bell's lane. The crash happened at 5:23 a.m. Bell was pronounced dead at 5:27 a.m. said Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

The driver of the pickup truck, whose name hasn't been released, was ejected from his vehicle. He was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards said he is in critical condition with head trauma at UAB Hospital.

The wreck closed 40th Street Southwest between Bessemer Avenue and Jefferson Avenue as authorities investigated the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
