San Jose, CA : Two men suffer life-threatening injuries in high-speed crash on I-680 in San Jose on Sunday night, January 31, 2016

Two men suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday night after a violent crash on Interstate 680 in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Before the crash, the Mustang grabbed the attention of a San Jose police cruiser that was parked in the area of Capitol Expressway and Story Road, according to the CHP. The Mustang "came flying by at a high-rate of speed," but by the time the patrol car began to get into position to pull over the Mustang, it was out of sight and on the freeway.

The officers reported the speeding car to police dispatchers, the CHP said.

About 10:15 p.m., the Mustang was traveling in the fast lane of northbound 680 at a "high rate of speed" when it tried to pass a slower-moving Toyota Camry by driving on the center median, according to the CHP. The right side of the Mustang collided with the left side of the Camry, and the driver of the Mustang lost control.

The Ford was turned from the median to the right, rotated in a counterclockwise direction, overturned and slid on its side to the right shoulder, according to the CHP. The Ford went down an embankment and overturned multiple times, ejecting two men from the car. The Ford came to a stop on the Capitol Expressway onramp to northbound 680.

Several San Jose firefighters responded to the scene and rendered first-aid to the two San Jose men who were thrown from the car. A 38-year-old San Jose man who was not ejected from the car suffered major injuries. All three men were rushed to hospitals.

The CHP said alcohol played a role in the crash.

Two people inside the Toyota were not injured.
