Colorado Springs, Colorado
Colorado State Patrol is investigating a fatal three-car crash that happened on Interstate 25 north of Briargate around 5:15 a.m. Sunday.
Troopers say a Ford Focus driven by 16-year-old Jose Huerta of Colorado Springs was headed northbound on I-25 when it went off the left side of the road and collided with a cable rail. After impact, the Ford rotated and came to rest on its wheels facing south in the left hand lane, according to officials.
Colorado State Patrol says at this time a Honda CR-Z driven by 27-year-old Colin Glenn of Colorado Springs was traveling northbound on I-25 and collided with the front of the Ford. After impact, the Ford was pushed north and came to rest in the center lane of I-25.
Troopers say the Honda CR-Z went into the left hand shoulder, rotated and collided with a cable rail. The car then came to rest on its wheels facing south on the left hand shoulder.
At this time, an Infinity M35 driven by 41-year-old Andrew Griffiths of Colorado Springs was traveling northbound on I-25 in the center lane and collided with the front of the Ford, according to officials. After impact, the Ford was pushed north, rotated and came to rest on the right shoulder. The Infinity went onto the left shoulder, skidded to impact with the cable rail and came to rest on its wheels facing north, according to authorities.
Huerta, the driver of the Ford, was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was airlifted to Penrose Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Glenn, the driver of the Honda, and a passenger, 24-year-old Grace Sung, both sustained serious injuries and were transported to Penrose Hospital. Troopers say both were wearing their seatbelts.
Griffiths, the driver of the Infinity, did not sustain any injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt. Three passengers in the Infiniti — 38-year-old Brandi Griffiths and a 5-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl — all were wearing their seatbelts and sustained minor injuries.
Troopers say at this time alcohol and drug use are not considered contributing factors in this crash, but sleeping at the wheel is being investigated as a contributing factor.
