Worcester, MA : 54-year-old bicyclist struck, killed by car on Belmont Street on Wednesday night, December 30, 2015

A 54-year-old bicyclist from Shrewsbury died Wednesday night from injuries suffered when he was struck by a car on Belmont Street.

Police did not identify the man who died or the driver of the car; the police Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated.

Police said a 29-year-old man driving a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle and the man on the bicycle were both heading west around 5:30 p.m. when they collided in the area of Rebecca Avenue.
Police said the man driving the Volkswagen pulled over and remained at the scene; the victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the car was traveling west on Belmont Street in the right lane. The bicycle was also traveling on the right side of the road.

Belmont Street was shut down to traffic at Adams Street and Granby Road for more than an hour Wednesday at rush hour while police interviewed the driver and investigated.

Wednesday night the bike was on its side in icy chunks of snow on the side of the road. A blinking red light attached to the rear remained operational as police studied the scene.
