CANON CITY, CO : A 57-year-old Montrose woman is dead following a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 50 on Thursday, December, 21st 2017
A 57-year-old Montrose woman is dead following a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 50 Thursday that involved a semi truck and two passenger vehicles.
According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Michael Tafoya, the victim was identified as Brenda Kay Robinson, who died at the scene of the accident. Her husband, George Robinson, 59, was taken to a local hospital then flown by helicopter for treatment of serious injuries at a larger hospital.
The accident occurred shortly after noon about 5 miles west of Canon City when a 2012 Kenworth tractor driven by Ricardo Charles, 48, of Henderson, Nev., failed to negotiate a right-hand curve as he was traveling eastbound on U.S. 50. The semi crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with a 2012 BMW driven by Mary Giacomelli, 73, of Westcliffe.
The semi then crossed back into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2011 Buick driven by George Robinson, of Montrose. The impact forced Robinson’s Buick through the guardrail and off the south side of the road.
The semi then collided with the guardrail, which dislodged a cargo of metal pipes onto the top of the Buick. The semi came to a stop after it plowed into a rock embankment, Tafoya reported.
Both Charles and his passenger, Denise Pacheco, also of Henderson, Nev., were uninjured.
Giacomelli was wearing her seatbelt and also was not injured.
Brenda Kay Robinson was riding in the front passenger seat of the Buick at the time of the crash.
Alcohol and drugs are not being considered a factor in the crash. However, the investigation is ongoing.
The roadway was icy at the time of the crash.
All lanes of U.S. 50 were closed for about three hours due to the crash. It opened to alternating traffic about 3 p.m. and was finally completely reopened at 6 p.m.
