Shelbyville, KY : One person died, another injured after a fatal accident on Interstate 64 in Shelby County on Wednesday afternoon, Oct 28, 2015
Interstate 64 west reopened around 3:30 p.m. in Shelby County after a fatal accident.
The crash closed the interstate between mile marker 36 and exit 35 for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office told WLKY that a Toyota pickup truck collided with the rear end of a tractor-trailer.
Prior to the fatal accident, traffic had slowed and was reduced to one lane due to an automobile fire that was off the roadway, officials said.
They said the pickup truck driver apparently did not notice the traffic slowing down and struck the end of the tractor-trailer.
The Sheriff's Office said the pickup truck was occupied by two men from Tennessee.
The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger of the pickup truck was taken to University Hospital, officials said.
The condition of the passenger has not been released.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said it could take 30 to 45 minutes for backed up traffic to clear.
