GILFORD, NH : Moment of silence held for Gilford student killed in car crash on May, Tuesday, 23rd 2017

The Gilford High School girls lacrosse team remembered one of their Tuesday who died in a car crash earlier this year.

Ava Doris, 16, was remembered as a kind and loving person. The daughter of a police dispatcher in town, Ava was also a member of the high school's lacrosse and field hockey teams.

She was killed in a car crash in March when she lost control of her car during a strong snowstorm.

During its last home game Tuesday afternoon, members of the Gilford lacrosse team held hands with members of the Belmont team and observed a moment of silence in Ava's memory.

"It's overwhelming," said her father, Tim Doris. "It's an awesome show of support by Ava's teammates, and Belmont, for them to show up and take part in this, it's awesome. It really is. It just shows how awesome this community is."

Ava was one of the team's goalies. Her teammates wore her initials on headbands that were purple, Ava's favorite color. Her family said Ava would love to see what the team has done to honor her, but it's something she would have never expected.

"It wasn't about her," said her mother, Jennifer Doris. "It was always about everybody else. She was just the most kind and generous kid."

Her parents said they're grateful for the support they have received from the Gilford community.

"Tim and I both have been givers our whole life, so we're always doing other things for the community, and you don't ever expect something to be returned in the manner that it has been returned during your most tragic time in your life," Jennifer Doris said.

"Every day, the heartache is there," Tim Doris said. "We miss her terribly, but what's heartwarming is how many people she touched in a positive way."

Her father said that when Ava got her driver's license last year, he encouraged her to become an organ donor. Her parents said they hope that their loss has helped other families in need.
