MORTON, IL : At least one person killed in I-74 accident near Morton on Wednesday, 26th February, 2020
A head-on van-truck collision Wednesday on Interstate 74 east of Morton killed one person and injured three others, according to authorities.
Shortly after 8 a.m. near milepost 106, the driver of a westbound 2003 Chevrolet van lost control of the vehicle and veered through the median into eastbound traffic, Illinois State Police reported.
The westbound van, which also carried two passengers, collided with an eastbound semi-trailer truck. Icy conditions were to blame, according to the State Police.
Tazewell County Coroner Charles Hanley pronounced the van driver dead about 9 a.m. at the scene.
The driver wasn’t identified, pending notification of relatives. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
An ambulance transported the van passengers to a hospital. Sustaining non-life-threatening injuries were Estreberto Gomez-Garcia, 22, of Bloomington and Cesar Andres Remolina-Alvarez, 33, of the South American country of Colombia.
The truck driver, 36-year-old Gabane I. Abdi of Mechanicsburg, Pa., also was transported to a hospital, also with injuries that didn’t appear to be life threatening.
