Charlottesville, VA : I-64 crash injures 3, ties up traffic on Monday, 17th October 2016
Virginia State Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 64 that sent three people to the hospital Monday afternoon and tied up traffic for hours.
Two cars collided on the eastbound interstate near mile marker 119, about a mile from the Fifth Street exit. The cars ended up off the road and on the road’s shoulder and both overturned.
The driver one car and two people riding in the other were taken by ambulance to the University of Virginia Medical Center. State police said at least one of the injured had serious injuries, but no further information on their conditions was available Monday evening.
Eastbound traffic on the highway was shut down for more than an hour at the U.S. 29 interchange while crews worked to free the injured from the crashed cars. Backups reached more than three miles at one point and traffic remained slow through the crash site for the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening.
The 2:15 p.m. crash occurred about two miles from a 5 a.m. westbound crash that happened at mile marker 117 in which one vehicle slammed into the rear end of another.
At least one person was transported to UVa’s hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Both crashes are still under investigation.
