FARMINGTON, ME : Slick roads, accidents in Franklin County on Tuesday, February 7th 2017
Tuesday's snowstorm slicked roads and prompted cancellations of school and university classes, selectmen meetings and a spelling bee.Two accidents were reported in Wilton on Tuesday morning.
Wilton Police Officer Brian Lynch said Jason Williamson, 32, of Lisbon Falls was driving a 2004 Ford Focus west on Route 156 toward Beans Corner about 6 a.m. when it slid off the corner at the intersection with McCrillis Corner Road and rolled over. Williamson was alone and was not injured, Lynch said.
A tractor-trailer jackknifed on Routes 2 and 4 in front of Dutch Treat at about 8:20 a.m., Lynch said. No one was injured but the road was closed to traffic for about an hour.
A dispatcher at the Franklin County Regional Communications Center reported little activity during the storm, which began with light snow in the morning, a break around noon and snow showers throughout the afternoon.
According to local weather reports, heavier precipitation was expected by early evening. Temperatures settled into the mid-teens by early afternoon.
A winter storm watch was in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Schools around Franklin County released students early, except in Rangeley. With just a dusting of snow and an early-release day already planned, Rangeley Lakes Regional School remained open until 1:30 p.m., according to a school employee.
The University of Maine at Farmington planned to close at 6 p.m. and canceled all evening classes.
The Franklin County Spelling Bee scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Strong Elementary School was postponed until 7 p.m. Feb. 15.
All after-school activities in Regional School Unit 9, including a freshmen basketball game with Skowhegan and a school board meeting, were canceled, said Joel Smith, assistant principal at Mt Blue High School.
Selectmen meetings in Wilton and Livermore Falls were postponed until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
