Gainesville, FL : Motorcyclist dies in crash on I-75 in in Alachua County on Thursday evening, May 26, 2016

A motorcyclist was killed Thursday evening when his bike struck the rear section of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 75.

Philip Edward Derickson, 27, of High Springs, died in the accident, according to a Florida Highway Patrol media release. He was riding a 2014 Yamaha.

The crash occurred in Alachua County around 8:30 p.m. as the truck was traveling north in the center lane. The semi was traveling at "normal interstate speed," the release states.

The driver of the 2016 Volvo truck, Gregory Lamar Scott, 48, of Griffin, Georgia, and his passenger, Judy L. Cunningham, 62, of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, were not injured, according to the FHP.

Derickson was pronounced dead at the scene by an Alachua County Fire Rescue official. He was not wearing a helmet, which is not required by law.
