LOUISVILLE, KY : 2 fatal crashes shut down I-65S in Hardin County on Friday, 27th September 2019

Two fatal multi-vehicle crashes shut down I-65 southbound in Hardin County on Friday morning.
The Kentucky State Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) said that the southbound lanes between mile markers 79 and 83 were closed due to the early morning crashes near the Sonora exit, Exit 81.
Kentucky State Police (KSP) said the second fatal crash occurred in the traffic backup at mile marker 83 after an earlier wreck in the area.
In a 9:30 AM update, KSP said that since both crashes were fatal, reconstruction is taking place at each scene. Reconstruction kept the roadway closed through the Friday morning rush hour. As of 9:30 AM, KSP said the blockage would be cleared in five to seven hours.
Drivers are now being detoured at Exit 86 near Glendale to US 31W and back onto I-65 S at the Exit 76 Interchange near Upton. Those stuck in the backup between each scene are being turned around, according to KSP.
Significant congestion is being reported on US 31W and nearby routes because of the detour.
For those traveling through toward Bowling Green, KSP recommends drivers take Exit 91 to Western Kentucky Parkway Westbound, to I-165 Southbound and rejoin I-65 in Bowling Green. This route is only about 20 minutes longer than a normal southbound trip down I-65 between the two locations.
