MULBERRY, FL : One killed, one injured in car-truck crash in Mulberry on Saturday, 15th December 2018
A 17-year-old was killed and his 18-year-old passenger was critically injured when the car they were driving in ran into the rear of a semi-truck early Sunday.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported Polk County Fire Rescue and deputies responded about 4 a.m. to the scene of a crash at U.S. 37 and State Road 640 in Mulberry. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of a black Honda Civic, Kenneth Haney of Bradley, was deceased at the scene and his passenger, Chad Hall of Mulberry, sustained critical injuries and was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. The driver of the truck, William Benavidez of Lakeland, 39, was not injured.
PCSO spokeswoman Carrie Horstman said preliminary investigation showed Haney was traveling south on U.S. 37, failed to stop and ran into the back of a semi-truck that was stopped at the red light at the intersection. Horstman said the crash caused extensive front damage and interior intrusion to the car. There were no signs that Haney was able to apply the brakes before hitting the semi-truck.
Neither impairment nor speed are currently considered to be factors in the crash, but the investigation is still ongoing. Haney and Hall were wearing seat belts and front and side airbags deployed.
U.S. 37 South was closed for about five hours and the Florida Department of Transportation routed traffic around the crash during the investigation.
