Boca Raton, FL : Pompano Beach man killed, woman injured in I-95 crash in Boca Raton on Monday, March 28, 2016

A Pompano Beach man is dead following a crash on Interstate 95 near Boca Raton, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

It happened about 5 p.m. Monday in the northbound lanes approaching Palmetto Park Road, the FHP said.

Rush hour traffic had slowed but James Edward Ferrauilo, 55, failed to stop in time and swerved to the left to try to avoid hitting other vehicles. His 1991 Nissan Pathfinder rear-ended a 2016 Ford Escape driven by Dawn Knowles-Gassett, 35, of Pompano Beach, investigators said.

Both SUVs spun out of control clockwise. The Ford came to rest on the shoulder of I-95 facing south. The Nissan was disabled in the center lanes and it caught fire, the FHP said.

Boca Raton Fire Rescue pulled Ferrauilo from the burning Nissan before it became engulfed in flames, according to the crash report.

Ferrauilo was pronounced dead at Delray Medical Center, in Delray Beach, the report stated.

The investigation is ongoing, the FHP said.
