Memphis, TN : Man hit by car dies, driver charged with having suspended license on Wednesday, December 9, 2015

A person was killed after being hit by a car. His death prompted a large police investigation.

Memphis police responded to the incident in the 600 block of Keel Avenue, just off Thomas Street, where witnesses said a car hit a person, who then went through the windshield.

Police said a woman was driving the car and ran away. That woman was later identified as 21-year-old Donna Taylor.

Witnesses said the driver of the car and her female passenger appeared to freak out and then kept driving with the man in her windshield. The man's leg was cut off.

Police said Taylor came back 10 or 15 minutes later.

The man who was hit died at the scene. Police identified the man as 57-year-old Curtis Lewis. According to the police report, Taylor told investigators he stepped in front of her car.

Officers determined that Taylor was driving on a suspended license because she couldn't provide proof of insurance in July 2013. She also couldn't provide proof of insurance during this investigation.

Taylor was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and violation of financial law. She is in jail on a $250 bond.

Police have not identified the man.
