Jacksonville ,Fl : One critically injured and three children injured after driver ripped off as it sideswiped a semi on Wednesday ,May 27th 2015
All three children were not wearing seat belts. And the 6-year-old girl was thrown from the car and remains hospitalized in critical condition, the Highway Patrol said.
David A. Huot, 25, was driving 61-year-old Robert Stanley Aronofsky and the children in a Hyundai when they pulled out of a subdivision on Winding Mare Boulevard about 9:25 a.m., Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan said. For an unknown reason, the car crossed into the left-rear wheels of the semi’s trailer. The impact tore off the Hyundai’s driver’s-side fenders and doors, jamming some of the sheet metal into the broken truck trailer’s wheel well.
The 6-year-old girl, sitting in the Hyundai’s left rear seat, was thrown out on impact.
"None of the injuries sustained in this crash are life-threatening, but they are serious in nature," Bryan said. "... From what we can tell at this point, there was only one restraint used at that time and it was by one of the adults."
The children and Huot were transported to UF Health Jacksonville by ambulance, while the 6-year-old was flown by medical helicopter, the sergeant said.
A second car hit the Hyundai after it sideswiped the truck, but its driver and the truck driver were not injured.
The wreck shut down Normandy Boulevard west of Yellow Water Road until about 10:45 a.m. The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and the lack of seat belt use, Bryan said.
