Hagerstown, MD : Fairplay woman killed in multi-vehicle crash on I-81 west of Hagerstown on Wednesday afternoon, June 29, 2016

A Fairplay woman died and several others were injured when a tractor-trailer caused a multivehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 81 west of Hagerstown, Maryland State Police said.

Jasmine Rafter, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-81 near the interchange with U.S. 40, according to a news release from state police.

Troopers said Rafter was sitting in the front-passenger seat of a Mazda 6 when the vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer that was being driven by John Royce Richards, 69, of Great Cacapon, W.Va.

Richards failed to control the speed of the tractor-trailer when traffic slowed. After the tractor-trailer hit the Mazda, the rig kept on going and struck several other vehicles, police said.

An unidentified motorist was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Troopers said five others were taken to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown.

Capt. Michael Fluharty, state police Western Troop commander, said in an email that authorities were releasing only the names of Rafter and Richards.
Seven vehicles were involved in the crash.
