East Boston, MA : Two MBTA Transit Police motorcycle officers injured in East Boston on Friday morning, September 5, 2014

Two MBTA Transit Police motorcycle officers were struck by a car this morning while on patrol in East Boston, officials said. Officers Lucas Sayers, 37, and Brendan Skerry, 29, were hit at about 10:30 a.m. near the Orient Heights Station in the area of Bennington Street, according to authorities. Sayers, who has been on the force for eight years, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with multiple injuries, including a broken leg that will require surgery, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. Skerry, who has been on the force for three years, was transported to Boston Medical Center for minor injuries, said MBTA Deputy Chief Jim Witzgall. Witzgall said the operator of the vehicle was a 60-year-old woman. According to a preliminary investigation, it appears the operator of the vehicle hit the officers as she was making an illegal U-turn on Bennington Street, said Boston police Sergeant Mike McCarthy. McCarthy said it does not seem like the driver intentionally hit the officers, however she will “likely be cited” for the incident. The investigation is still ongoing, McCarthy said.
