Beckley, W.V : Grove City family killed in car crash after visit to Disney World early Monday morning, March 28, 2016
The crash that took the lives of Lizzie Crowell’s family happened early Monday morning in a stretch of Interstate 77 in West Virginia.
West Virginia State Police believe alcohol may have factored the crash that killed four people, including two girls 6 and 9 years old, who were returning from their vacation to Disney World.
“My grandson called me about 6:00 and said they had a good time. They had just gone through Savannah, Georgia and they’d be home around 2:30,” Crowell said.
But the family never called.
The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. Monday on the West Virginia Turnpike south of Beckley, Lt. Michael Baylous said.
Baylous said 35-year-old Cory Sheward, of Tiffin, Ohio, was driving a pickup truck south in the northbound lane and hit an SUV head-on with eight people inside.
27-year-old Maxine Wade, 29-year-old Carlisa Crowell, 9-year-old Tasha Freeman and 6-year-old Aubrey Willoubey were killed, Crowell said.
“It’s hard,” she said. “But we are trying to be strong.”
The other four people in the SUV were 27, 8, 4 and 3 years old.
Sheward and the other four in the SUV suffered injuries that don’t appear life-threatening, Baylous said.
Crowell said she cannot be angry with the alleged killer.
“I got to pray for this man,” she said. “Because when he wakes up and finds out what he done did, he has a spiritual price to pay.”
Police expect to charge Sheward with four counts each of driving under the influence causing death and causing bodily injury, Baylous said. He was in the hospital as of Tuesday morning and hadn’t yet been charged, he said.
No one in either vehicle was wearing a seatbelt, Baylous said. Police believe Sheward did not follow a curve on the highway and drove through a crossover to head into oncoming traffic, he said.
