Hickory, NC: Bicyclist killed in a crash on Monday morning August 2nd 2015.
A driver was charged after a male bicyclist was struck and killed in Hickory Monday morning, officials say.
Steffan Robinson, 21, is charged with DWI, felony death by vehicle and driving left of center.
According to investigators, the crash happened around 8:15 a.m. along North Center Street. They say Robinson was headed north along North Center Street and crossed the center line.
That's when Robinson reportedly hit the man on the bicycle, later identified as 29-year-old Tyler Finley Sims, who was coming the opposite way and riding in the shoulder.
Investigators say Sims was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but was thrown nearly 50 feet from the impact. He was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
As he was led from police headquarters, WBTV asked Robinson if he was sorry for the incident. He answered, "Yes sir."
"I don't think anyone would anything like that on purpose," Robinson added. "I don't think anything I say is gonna bring him back."
