Aspen, CO : Semi rollover crash closed Highway 82 at Willits intersection on Thursday, December 22nd 2016

A four-vehicle accident that sent three people to the hospital had Highway 82 at Willits Lane backed up for hours Thursday afternoon.

According to Sgt. David Evridge of the Colorado State Patrol, at approximately 12:15 p.m. yesterday, a semi carrying a full load of drywall was eastbound on Highway 82. The semi failed to stop for a red light at Willits Lane.

The truck then collided with a grey GMC Sierra, which was turning left from Willits Lane onto westbound Highway 82. The Sierra was consequently pushed into a white Ford Expedition, which in turn hit a red Toyota Tundra that was waiting to turn left from westbound Highway 82 onto Willits Lane. The semi then rolled, leaving several tons of drywall in the middle of Highway 82.

Two adults and one child occupant from the passenger vehicles were transported to nearby hospitals with unknown injuries. There were no fatalities at the scene.

In addition to the pile of drywall, which stood head high, approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the saddle tanks of the semi. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, and local fire, EMS and law enforcement agencies were assisting in traffic control.

Several wreckers and cranes were on the scene, trying to get the semi upright and to clean the drywall from the highway. As of 4:30 p.m. traffic in both directions was being diverted at the affected intersection.
