St. Petersburg, FL : 15-year-old Austin Demauro killed in skateboarding accident near the Fossil Park skate park on Sunday, February 1, 2015

A St. Petersburg teenager is dead after hitting his head while skateboarding.

Police say 15-year-old Austin Demauro and 15-year-old Julio Moisa had met near the Fossil Park skate park just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

At some point, Moisa began driving his mother's 2003 Mercedes sedan northbound on Atwood Avenue North, with Demauro on his skateboard, holding onto the right rear corner of the vehicle.

Before getting to Northwest Boulevard, Demauro let go. Moisa went down the road, turned around, and picked Demauro back up, on the south side of Northwest Boulevard. He accelerated, with Demauro again on his skateboard, holding onto the right rear corner of the car. They traveled a short distance, then Demauro let go.

Demauro became unstable on the skateboard and fell to the ground, striking his head. Bystanders began CPR and Demauro was transported to Bayfront Health St Petersburg, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation continues.
