Tacoma, WA : Pierce deputy hurt after crashing into 4 cows in Roy on Sunday, May 22, 2016

A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized late Sunday after his patrol vehicle ran into four cows in Roy.

The deputy, 29, was responding about 10 p.m. to a traffic accident with his car’s lights and sirens on when it struck the bovines in the 2000 block of 336th Street South.

“Several cows had gotten loose from a nearby farm and were in the middle of the road,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Monday. “The cows were black. It was dark and in a rural area.”

Three cows died instantly; the fourth was euthanized.

The deputy was knocked unconscious and taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for a concussion. Troyer said the deputy will be out of work for at least a week.

His vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, was totaled.

Officials have not determined whether the owner of the cows will be held liable for the wreck.
