Morganton, North Carolina
A Connelly Springs man was killed in a head-on collision Sunday morning.
Carolos Geovanni Giron-Del Valle, 31, was driving a Honda south on U.S. Highway 64 in Morganton when a Hyundai driven by Jadan Tivon Jolly, 19, of Shelby, crossed the center line and collided with him, said Trooper D. Wakefield of the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
Wakefield was dispatched to the wreck near Gold Mine Road at 7:42 a.m., and Valle was pronounced dead 2 minutes later. Jolly broke both of his arms and his right leg. He was transported by helicopter to an Asheville hospital for his injuries, Wakefield said.
Wakefield charged Jolly with driving left of center, driving with no operator’s license, not wearing a seatbelt and possession of a schedule VI controlled substance after marijuana was found in his vehicle.
“Once we get the blood results back from the (State Bureau of Investigation), we’ll consult with the District Attorney’s Office to see if they want to pursue anything further,” Wakefield said.
The speed of both vehicles at the time of impact has not been determined, Wakefield said. However, Jolly’s speedometer was stuck at 84 mph.
Wakefield said he believes his speed was close to 84 mph, but information will be downloaded from both vehicles to get a more accurate reading. The speed limit was 55 mph in the area.
