Chico, CA : Distracted driving plays role in rollover crash on East Avenue on Thursday afternoon, April 14, 2016

Distracted driving played a role in a rollover crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of East and Cussick avenues, police said.

The crash occurred about 2:40 p.m., when the driver of a 1994 Ford pickup traveling east on East Avenue slammed into a BMW SUV heading south on Cussick Avenue, Chico police officer Nicholas Rush said.

The collision caused the BMW to spin and overturn, coming to a rest on the driver’s side. The driver of the SUV, a woman who police declined to identify, escaped the crash unhurt.

Rush said witnesses reported that the driver of the Ford pickup ran a red light, causing the wreck. The officer further stated that the driver of the pickup, who identified himself as 27-year-old Robert Newcomb of Oroville, admitted to running the traffic light.

Rush said distracted driving was a factor in the crash.

Newcomb, who also wasn’t hurt, told the Enterprise-Record that he “was just glad she was all right,” referring to the driver of the BMW.

No arrests were made.

It took about an hour for officials to clear the roadway of the wreck.
