Metro Detroit, MI : EB I-696 closed through morning rush hour after fatal crash on eastbound I-696 at Woodward on Tuesday, 11th February, 2020

Eastbound Interstate 696 in south Oakland County is reopened after two were killed in a crash Tuesday morning.

The crash took place about 5:30 a.m. on eastbound I-696 at Woodward, according to Michigan State Police. Two people have died, police confirmed. The roadway was closed until about 11 a.m.

Michigan State Police say two vehicles had initially been involved in a minor crash. The drivers exited their vehicles and were standing beside them when each man was struck by passing vehicles.Both drivers, a 61-year-old man from Westland and a 39-year-old man from Oak Park, were killed at the scene. A driver of one of the vehicles that struck the pair was taken to a hospital. The driver of the other car was treated at a hospital and released, according to state police.

Information on the crash "is very fluid," state police say, and could change in the course of the investigation.


The I-696 crash was the second fatal freeway crash of the early morning in Metro Detroit, state police said.
