Erie, PA : Erie man gets state prison in crash that injured boy on April, Wednesday 5th 2017
An Erie County judge sentenced a man to state prison Wednesday for leaving the scene of a crash after hitting a 12-year-old who was seriously injured.
The sentence went beyond the aggravated range of state guidelines.
Ehab Azez, 20, received 15 to 30 months in state prison followed by four years of probation from Judge Daniel Brabender.
“I think this case screams for an aggravated-range sentence,” Brabender said. “There was serious harm to the victim here.”
The victim in the case, now 13, appeared in court in a wheelchair. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, a fractured skull and a broken femur in the crash, among other injuries.
Azez, of Erie, pleaded guilty in February to a third-degree felony count of accidents involving death or personal injury. The standard range of state sentencing guidelines for the charge to which Azez pleaded is three to nine months in prison, said Azez’s lawyer, Ian Murray.
“This accident was a fateful, horrible event, period,” Murray said. He asked for a sentence that would allow for work release, so that Azez could begin paying restitution to the victim’s family.
Police did not accuse Azez of causing the crash, but of leaving the scene after the accident.
