Ocoee, FL : 2 children injured when SUV drives onto sidewalk in Ocoee on Tuesday afternoon, January 20, 2015

Two children were injured in a crash with a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ocoee Fire Department.
"When I ran outside there was a girl laying in the middle of the road and a little boy sitting on the sidewalk," witness Kelsey Hey said. "Thank God one guy veered off in the middle of the road and stopped traffic."

Officials said the accident occurred near North Clarke Road and East Silver Star Road Drive in Ocoee. Investigators said the driver was allegedly driving the wrong way before driving onto a sidewalk and hitting the children.

The children, a boy and a girl, attend Citrus Elementary, officials said.

Ocoee police said the driver of the SUV did not immediately stop. Instead he allegedly drove over the median at a high rate of speed into and through oncoming traffic.

"There really isn't any excuse why he couldn't see those kids," Ocoee Police Lt. Mike Bryant said. "Witnesses actually followed this guy until he stopped and they stood with him until police came."

Police drew blood to see if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The boy is recovering Tuesday night. Police said the girl is having surgery for severe brain swelling.
