Premont, TX : Two people dead, 12 injured in pickup truck accident, vehicle hits tree in South Texas on Sunday night, December 13, 2015

Investigators say two men have been killed and a dozen passengers hurt when a pickup truck missed a turn and hit a tree in South Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the crash happened Sunday night near Premont (PREE'-mahnt).

Trooper Nathan Brandley said Monday that the truck failed to stop at an intersection, then tried to make a left turn at a high rate of speed and crashed into a tree.

DPS says the driver and one passenger died at the scene. The other 12 passengers were transported to hospitals in Corpus Christi, Kingsville and Alice.

Authorities are trying to identify the dead and injured, including three people in critical condition, and determine whether they were smuggled immigrants.
