Scott County ,KY : 13- Years old girl killed and four others injured after Crash on Saturday morning ,May 23rd 2015
The Scott County Sheriff tells our Lexington affiliate (WKYT) that a 13-year-old girl, of Lexington, was killed in a crash on Saturday morning.
Sheriff Tony Hampton said she was a passenger in a pickup truck with her mother and father. She has been identified as Emily Sams, an 8th grade student at Bourbon County Middle School.
Her mother, Shella Sams, is in critical condition at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital and the father, Jeff Sams, is injured but alert.
Sheriff Hampton said Emily was ejected from the pickup and they're not sure if she was wearing a seat belt or not.
Hampton said the pickup truck and a car with two people inside collided.
The people in the car were from Baltimore and were on their way to Louisville. Deputies say they were injured but are expected to be O.K.
The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. at mile marker 70 on Interstate 64 in Scott County. The Sheriff said the car dropped off of the left shoulder of the road and over-corrected, hitting the side of the pickup. That caused both cars to run off the road and crash.
Investigators believe the pickup may have flipped twice.
The westbound lanes of I-64 were shut down through 11 a.m. Drivers were urged to find another route at the Interstate 75/Interstate 64 split in Fayette County.
Deputies say Emily's grandparents were driving behind the pickup in another car and witnessed the crash. They say her grandmother ran towards the crash and tried to help.
Sheriff Hampton said it's too early in their investigation to determine any factors in the crash and whether or not charges will be filed.
