Police are continuing to investigate after a multi-vehicle crash left one person dead and shut down a busy interstate for hours.
According to Kentucky State Police, the victim who died Wednesday afternoon on Interstate-64 was Doris E. Wise, 71, of Louisville Ky.
Both lanes of I-64, near mile marker 35, reopened by 8:30 Wednesday night, six hours after crews first responded.
Police said when the driver of a semi-truck, Miroslav Kuzmanovic, 22, of Lakewood, WA, suddenly noticed an officer helping a stranded motorist on the side of the road, he was unable to slow down.
What happened next was a horrific chain reaction that sent him and two others to the hospital and left one woman dead.
During the investigation Kuzmanovic was arrested and now faces several charges including reckless homicide and communication device violation.
The first crew on the scene were firefighters from House 2.
Less than 2 miles away, the firefighters heard the impact of the crash and responded.
Moments later, other departments responded to a call of a semi overturned and a vehicle on fire, with possibly a person trapped.
Shelbyville Fire Chief Kevin Baker said there was no opportunity for a rescue. The woman in the car, Wise, had been killed immediately.
