North Montgomery, TX : Driver left 5-month-old baby bleeding in road after car crash Sunday nigh on July 20, 2014
Authorities in Montgomery County said Monday they are searching for a driver who they believe abandoned a 5-month-old boy face-down and bleeding in the middle of the road after a vehicle crash that threw the child from the car Sunday night.
The accident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday in north Montgomery County.
"We have a very active investigation into the crash right now," said Eric Burse, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman.
He did not release any names and refused to confirm initial news reports that the male driver was related to the child.
The child was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he was listed in stable condition Monday.
"The baby was conscious and crying when we got there," said Jeff McDonald, a spokesman for the ambulance crew with the North Montgomery County Fire Department. "The child's mother drove up shortly afterward. She appeared very upset. It was a crazy scene."
According to investigators, the child had been a passenger in the Ford Fusion that the man was driving. Witnesses said he was traveling at a high rate of speed before plowing into a mailbox and flipping near the intersection of East Williams Road and South Williams, authorities said.
The vehicle ended upside down, and the child was thrown into the middle of the road. Authorities said the driver fled before rescue workers arrived.
