Monessen,PA : Man killed in backhoe accident at his Washington Township home on November, Sunday 26th 2017

A Washington Township man died Sunday after being trapped in a backhoe, township police said.

Officer Jeff Vertullo said James Tonecha, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at his home at 254 Pine Run Church Road.

Vertullo said it appears Tonecha was looking out the back window of the backhoe when it began to drift backward toward the pile of dirt he was working in.

Tonecha became trapped when the arm of the backhoe came back onto the cab part of the machine where he was sitting.

“It's unclear as to whether or not he had bumped any other controls in the cab,” Vertullo said.

The incident happened about 6:20 p.m. Police were at the scene until about 9 p.m.

Vertullo said an autopsy will be performed.

No other information was immediately available.
