Seymour, IN : Semi collision closes I-65 northbound near Seymour on Tuesday, September 16, 2014
Law enforcement and firefighters are at the scene of a collision involving three semi-tractor trailers on Interstate 65 north of the Uniontown exit.
The accident was reported at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in the northbound lanes of the interstate at the 43 1/2 mile marker.
Indiana State Police said traffic on I-65 was backed up and slowing because of lane restrictions on that section of interstate when the accident occurred.
A 2014 Freightliner rig driven by Jeffrey K. Dickson, 40, Edmonton, Kentucky, struck the rear of a 2012 Freightliner driven by Michael D. Flowers, 51, Vine Grove, Kentucky, police said.
Police said that collision forced Flowers' semi into the rear of a 2015 Mack rig (a UPS semi) driven by Eddie L. Hayes, 70, Indianapolis.
After the collision, a fire broke out but was extinguished by police. Dickson was trapped in his cab for a short period of time before police freed him.
Indiana State Police said Dickson said he didn't notice traffic slowing until it was too late. Dickson suffered facial lacerations and a knee laceration and was treated and released from Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.
Flowers was also treated and released at Schneck for neck and back pain. Hayes was not injured.
Cleanup continued into the evening and the interstate's northbound lanes were still closed at about 7 p.m.
The suggested detour is for northbound traffic is to exit at Uniontown (exit 41) and travel north to U.S. 50 in Seymour where drivers can re-enter I-65 northbound.
Southbound I-65 remains open and traffic is flowing normally, police said.
