Springfield, IL : Colorado motorcyclist killed in I-55 crash near Springfield on Monday, 5th September 2016
A 57-year-old Colorado man was killed and his passenger was injured Monday in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident on Interstate 55 near the East Lake Shore Drive exit, authorities said.
Joseph Bravo, 57, of Fort Lupton, Colorado, was heading north on the interstate about 11:25 a.m. He started to slow down due to a flat rear tire, lost control and overturned in the middle lane, Illinois State Police said.
Bravo was taken to Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:12 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, the Sangamon County coroner’s office said.
Leslie Bravo, 58, a passenger on the motorcycle, was injured in the crash. She was listed in stable condition at Memorial Monday evening.
About a half-hour after the motorcycle crash, state police responded to a second accident on the interstate, about a mile to the south.
Thomas J. Keegan, 27, from Wisconsin, told state police he didn’t realize that the traffic in front of him was slowing down and stopping due to an accident. He struck the back of a Ford sport utility vehicle in front of him that was driven by Billy J. Allison, 68, of Missouri.
The impact caused the sport utility vehicle to overturn onto its top.
Both drivers, as well as a passenger in the Ford, Gene M. Allison, 47, also of Missouri, were taken to HSHS St. John’s Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Both crashes remain under investigation. No citations had been issued as of Monday afternoon, state police said.
