NORTON, OH : Student struck by bus, killed near Norton High School on Wednesday, 14th September 2016
A student was struck by a bus and killed near Norton High School Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Summit County medical examiner's office, the crash happened in the 3200 block of Greenwich Road around 3 p.m, in front of Norton Middle School.
According to Norton Police, the victim was a 16-year-old Norton High School student who suffered severe head trauma. He died at the scene.
The boy was riding his skateboard next to the bus, tripped and fell in front of it. Witnesses on the scene say he tried to yell for the bus to stop but the driver was unable to hear him in time. Students on board said they heard someone call 911 and that the driver started panicking.
Norton Schools Superintendent Dave Dunn issued a statement in response to the incident.
"A Norton High School student was fatally injured in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon," said Dunn.
"School will be in session tomorrow and Friday with counselors available. No specifics are being released while the accident is under investigation."
Fellow students including Jessica McShane set up a small vigil with flowers near the scene of the crash.
"We're all here for him, even though he's not here," said McShane. "We're all praying for him, at least he's in a better place."
Norton police, fire and EMS are currently investigating. Greenwich Road has been reopened to traffic
