Springville, UT : Two dead after violent crash in Hobble Creek Canyon on Friday afternoon, June 10, 2016
An Elk Ridge couple is dead after their Dodge pickup fell 600 feet into a ravine as they were driving on Right Fork Hobble Creek Road in Hobble Creek Canyon on Friday afternoon.
According to Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon, a bicyclist reported seeing "skid marks and car parts" going over the edge of a cliff.
Cannon indicated the crash was violent as the truck rolled several times and received extensive damage. Deputies reported that the tire tracks did not show evidence that the pickup had skidded or slid on the dirt road before going over the side.
"The pickup is registered to Lance J. Simpson, age 46, of Elk Ridge. His body, and the body of his wife, Jade Simpson, were found in different areas along the path where the pickup came off the dirt road," Cannon said. "The pickup rolled multiple times before coming to rest."
Cannon said it’s not known whether they were wearing seat belts. The belts were buckled, but investigators aren’t sure if the victims were restrained or if they were sitting in front of them.
"Utah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue volunteers responded and recovered both bodies," Cannon said. "The bodies of Lance and Jade Simpson were taken to the Office of Medical Examiner in Salt Lake. Investigators were not able to determine what caused the truck to leave the road."
There was evidence at the scene and in the pickup that leads investigators to believe alcohol might have been a factor in the crash. This remains an active investigation in an effort to determine what caused the crash.
