Ormond Beach, FL : Truck driver exits cab, dies after being run over by own rig in Volusia County early Monday morning, December 7, 2015

The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed early Monday morning after he exited the truck and was run over by his own driverless rig, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 6:23 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Lowndes Avenue in Ormond Beach.

According to troopers, a tractor-trailer was reported to be driving erratically north on U.S. 1.

Sgt. Kim Montes, of the Florida Highway Patrol, said the 46-year-old driver from Miami Gardens exited the tractor-trailer while it was in motion and was subsequently run over by the truck. His name has not been released.
The driverless tractor-trailer then crashed into a vehicle heading south on U.S. 1. Montes said the driver of the car, 28-year-old Roberto Jaimes of Seveille and his passenger, 42-year-old Rosalva Rivaz Rangel of Crescent City, were both seriously hurt and taken to Halifax Medical Center.

The tractor-trailer was empty at the time of the crash and was traveling from the Miami area, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.
