BELFAST, ME : Belfast man dead, Rockport woman injured in head-on crash on Sunday, 11th September 2016
A Belfast man was killed Sunday night when the Saturn SL sedan he was driving north on Route 1 crossed the centerline and traveled into the path of an oncoming Saturn Vue SUV driven by a Rockport woman, a Belfast police official said Monday.
Kevin Hustus, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Matthew Cook said Monday. He said Belfast fire and rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to extricate Hustus from the wreckage.
The other driver, 55-year-old Deborah Brady of Rockport, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Cook said. Brady initially was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast but later was flown by Lifeflight to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
The crash, which occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. near the Belfast Armory, shut down Route 1 for about 3½ hours, Cook said.Witnesses told police that Hustus’ vehicle appeared to have drifted into oncoming traffic and struck Brady’s vehicle head-on.
The crash remained under investigation Monday. It is being reconstructed by Maine State Police Cpl. Patrick Munzing.
