Ellsworth,IA : Bicycle injured in hit by a car Monday night August 11th 2015

A city resident riding his bicycle was injured after being hit by a car Monday night at the bottom of Bridge Hill.
Randolph W. Garland, 50, who lives on the Surry Road, was riding in what witnesses described as a dangerous manner prior to the crash. He was not wearing a helmet, and suffered what police characterized as serious injuries. The crash occurred around 8:10 p.m., at the intersection of South and Main streets. A 2007 Saab driven by 52-year-old Daniel J. Lepage of Pembroke, N.H. was heading west on Main Street and turning onto South Street.
Garland was coming down Main Street toward South Street, but Lepage told police he never saw the bicyclist because there were no lights on the bike and it was getting dark.
Garland was thrown from the bike as a result of the crash, and his injuries were described as incapacitating. His most serious injury, according to a police report, was bleeding from his face.
He was taken from the scene by ambulance. A Maine Coast Memorial Hospital spokesman said Tuesday morning Garland was not a patient there, and additional information about Garland’s condition was not immediately available.
Two witnesses from Ellsworth said they saw Garland before the crash “swerving back and forth on the upper end of Bridge Hill.” He then reportedly ran the stop sign where the Bucksport Road intersects with Main Street and Surry Road, “and was nearly struck by a car at that intersection,” according to what the witnesses told police.
They also said they saw Garland “crouching down on the bike as if to gain speed going down the hill” prior to the intersection with South Street.
A third witness said she also saw the bike “traveling at a fast pace coming down the hill.”
Police said Lepage failed to yield the right of way, but also noted there is no marked crosswalk at that intersection and that Garland was not very visible at the time of the crash.
