Phoenix, AZ : Two people dead after a fatal ATV accident in Tonopah on Sunday afternoon, February 22, 2015
Two Glendale men died Sunday when the all-terrain vehicles they were driving collided along the Hassayampa River bottom Sunday afternoon, a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
Jesus Chavez, 23, was headed north on the river bottom just east of 399th Avenue and north of Indian School Road when his ATV collided with one driven by 47-year-old Dana Coerver.
The area is commonly used for off-road vehicle drag racing, Deputy Joaquin Enriquez said.
Witnesses told detectives Coerver had just completed a racing run and was turning around, cutting across the informal drag strip, when the collision happened, Enriquez said. Both men were ejected from their ATVs, Enriquez said.
Witnesses also said unidentified persons loaded Coerver's ATV into a truck and left.
Both men were dead at the scene, Enriquez said.
The case was still under investigation Monday morning.
