Blair, NE : A Herman woman is in critical condition after a one-vehicle rollover crash on May, Tuesday 9th 2017
A Herman woman is in critical condition after a one-vehicle rollover crash Tuesday afternoon on County Road P43 south of Fort Calhoun.
Three children and the driver were also injured in the crash, which happened just before 3 p.m.
Capt. Shawn Thallas of the Washington County Sheriff's Office said a 1999 Dodge Dakota was traveling northbound on County Road P43 near the intersection of County Road P38.
The driver, Austin D. Casey, 24, of Herman told deputies that a wasp had flown into the vehicle. He was attempting to swat the insect with his baseball cap because his fiancee and passenger, April Gladwin, 21, is allergic to wasps.
The distraction caused the truck to leave the right side of the road. Casey overcorrected. The vehicle slid across the road, entered the west ditch and rolled onto its side.
Gladwin was pinned under the truck.
Deputies, first responders and bystanders tried to lift the truck to help Gladwin.
“They did an amazing job getting the vehicle up so they could extricate (her),” Chief Deputy Kevin Willis said.
Kelli BenSalah was one of several motorists who were driving through the area at the time of the crash and stopped to help the couple.
BenSalah saw a young man holding the door of the truck open for Casey as she came upon the scene.
BenSalah offered scissors to cut the children out of their car seats. One child was removed, but there was difficulty getting the other two. That's when BenSalah jumped in the truck and used another tool to get the children out.
The bystanders then turned their attention to Gladwin.
One woman stopped a car with three people inside to help lift the truck, but it "didn't budge," BenSalah said.
Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue and Ponca Hills Rescue responded to scene a few minutes later and were able to free the woman.
